RESIDENTIAL HOMESTEAD EXEMPTION

 Important Tax Exemption

Information for New Homeowners

Filing a residential homestead exemption is an opportunity for homeowners to mitigate their Texas property tax liability and reduce demands on finances. Texas law grants homeowners certain tax exemptions on their principal residence (i.e. the home they live in and not leasing to a third party or an investment property like a vacation home). Filing a homestead exemption is free and simple for anyone to complete themself. A homestead exemption can save a homeowner up to $250 annually, in addition to preventing the assessed value of the home from increasing over 10% per year.

Homestead exemptions must be filed between January 1st and April 30th of the tax year. Once a homestead exemption is filed there is no need to file again so long as the property owner continues to use the property as a primary residence. The property must be the owner's primary residence on January 1st of the year in which the exemption will apply.
